Norwegian prosecutors have formally indicted Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, on 32 criminal charges including rape, domestic abuse, assault, death threats, and traffic violations.
According to Oslo state attorney Sturla Henriksbø, the investigation culminated in a comprehensive indictment filed on Monday. Høiby could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Prosecutors allege that he committed rape and abuse against one former partner and acts of violence against another during separate relationships. He is also charged with making death threats and additional offenses involving traffic violations.
Høiby has been under scrutiny since a series of arrests last year in connection with various allegations. He currently remains free pending trial, and prosecutors stated that there is no immediate basis to detain him before court proceedings.
The case is expected to go to trial in mid-January and could last up to six weeks, according to the state prosecutor’s office.
Although Høiby is a member of the royal family through his mother, he holds no royal title and has no official duties. His legal team said he takes the allegations seriously but denies most of the accusations, particularly those concerning sexual assault and violence.
The Norwegian royal palace issued a brief statement noting that the matter is for the courts to resolve, and that it will offer no further comment.
