A 22-year-old Polish man has been arrested following a fatal axe attack on the campus of the University of Warsaw. The incident, which the institution has called a “huge tragedy,” occurred at approximately 6:40 p.m. local time on May 7, 2025.
Police confirmed that the assailant entered the campus and attacked two individuals with an axe. One victim, a female administrative employee of the university, died at the scene. A security guard was also injured and remains in critical condition at the hospital. The attacker, a third-year law student, was quickly detained by law enforcement.

While unconfirmed by prosecutors, some reports indicated that a woman’s severed head and an axe were discovered at the site of the attack, located within a university auditorium. Authorities have yet to release full details pending further investigation.
Law enforcement established a perimeter around the scene, with several police vans stationed near the cordoned-off lecture hall.

In response to the tragedy, the Rector of the University of Warsaw declared May 8 a day of mourning. In an official statement, the university expressed its sorrow and extended condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.
