A tragic bus accident in southeastern Brazil claimed the lives of 11 people, including two children, after a passenger bus overturned in the early hours of Tuesday. The incident occurred in the municipality of Araguari as the vehicle traveled from the state of Goiás to Ribeirão Preto in São Paulo.
The bus was carrying approximately 50 passengers when the driver lost control, causing it to flip onto its side. According to military firefighters, several victims were ejected from the vehicle during the rollover, while others remained trapped inside.
Ten people, including the two children aged between 2 and 4, were pronounced dead at the scene. One additional victim later died from injuries sustained in the crash at a local hospital, police confirmed.

The bus was operated by Real Expresso, a company that services Brazil’s major cities. In a statement, the company expressed “deep regret” over the incident and confirmed that 16 injured passengers were receiving medical treatment. The company also stated it is cooperating fully with authorities investigating the cause of the accident.
The crash adds to a growing number of deadly road incidents in Brazil. In 2024 alone, over 10,000 people have died in traffic accidents, according to data from the Ministry of Transportation.

Earlier this year, 12 people were killed in February when a bus carrying university students collided with a truck in São Paulo state. In September, three people died after a bus transporting the Coritiba Crocodiles football team overturned. Another devastating incident occurred in December when a bus and truck crash in Minas Gerais claimed the lives of 38 people.
Authorities continue to investigate Tuesday’s crash in Araguari to determine the precise cause.
