Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso has officially been declared an illegal resident in South Africa by the Department of Home Affairs, following his arrest in East London on Saturday morning, May 10. The move comes just weeks after Omotoso was acquitted of multiple serious charges, including rape, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
Omotoso was taken into custody during a coordinated operation led by authorities in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster. According to a statement issued by the Department of Home Affairs, his arrest followed the rejection of an application he submitted under Section 8(7) of the Immigration Act. The application sought to overturn a prior decision declaring him a prohibited person in South Africa.

Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Leon Schreiber made the final decision to uphold the original prohibition, effectively rendering Omotoso's presence in the country unlawful and subject to immediate deportation.
Omotoso had previously challenged his prohibited status in court. The court subsequently ordered the Department of Home Affairs to reconsider the classification. After a comprehensive review, the minister reaffirmed the initial declaration, leading to this weekend’s enforcement action.
Authorities have confirmed that Omotoso will appear in court on Monday, May 12, 2025, to face charges related to the violation of the Immigration Act. His arrest has drawn significant public attention, especially given his controversial history and the recent "New Dawn" religious crusade he led in East London following his acquittal.
