A Pennsylvania woman who admitted to fabricating kidnapping and rape allegations against a stranger she "specifically targeted" because she thought he was "creepy" has been sentenced for her false claims.

Anjela Borisova Urumova, 20, received a sentence ranging from 45 days to 23 months in the Bucks County Correctional Facility. Judge Stephen A. Corr handed down the ruling, also imposing a one-year probation period, ordering her to have no contact with the victim, pay $3,600 in restitution, and undergo a mental health evaluation.

In January, Urumova pleaded guilty to seven misdemeanor counts, including tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and false reports. She originally faced up to 17 years in prison. Her false accusations led to the wrongful incarceration of Daniel Pierson, 41, who spent 31 days in jail before she admitted to fabricating the claims.

District Attorney Jennifer Schorn condemned Urumova’s actions, emphasizing the broader implications of false accusations. "Not only did this targeted false report impact the victim and his family in unimaginable ways, but there is also a profound ripple effect. A crime like this can shatter the community’s confidence in the system. It can jeopardize prosecutions of legitimate crimes of sexual violence."

Pierson and his wife were present during the sentencing, though he declined to make a statement, with prosecutors noting the emotional toll the ordeal had taken on him and his family. The case originated on April 16, 2024, when Urumova reported being attacked outside a Redner’s supermarket. She claimed her assailant pulled her pants down, struck her, and left a bruise on her face. She later identified Pierson as her attacker before ultimately admitting the allegations were false.

Investigators determined that Urumova had targeted Pierson because she had seen him and his blue Ford F-150 pickup truck in the area before and thought he was "creepy." The Middletown Township Police Department reviewed surveillance footage and analyzed Urumova’s cellphone data, uncovering inconsistencies in her account. These discrepancies ultimately led to her arrest on May 20, 2024. She was held on $30,000 bail before sentencing.

During the court proceedings, Chief Deputy District Attorney Kristin M. McElroy credited detectives for their diligence in proving Pierson’s innocence and criticized Urumova’s actions. "In this case, she targeted an innocent man and accused him of one of the worst crimes a person can be accused of," McElroy stated. "I’m incredibly grateful for the work that law enforcement did in this case to get down to what happened, but it can’t change the fact that a man spent 31 days sleeping in a cell for a crime he didn’t commit."

The case underscores the severe consequences of false allegations and highlights the importance of thorough investigative work in ensuring justice.
