Inspector Stephen Enang of the Nigerian Police Force tragically passed away on Tuesday night while watching the UEFA Champions League match between Arsenal and Real Madrid at a football viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River State.
Enang, a dedicated Arsenal supporter, was attached to the Akim Police Division along IBB Way in Calabar before his sudden death. He was a well-known regular at the viewing centre located on Abang-Asang Street in Calabar Municipality Local Government Area, where he watched matches with fellow fans.
Witnesses said that Enang showed no signs of illness before the game and had enthusiastically celebrated all three Arsenal goals during the match. According to a close friend who asked not to be named, the inspector had been in high spirits throughout the game, cheering loudly and joining others in jubilation after each goal.

“Before the match, he was hale and hearty. There was no issue whatsoever that we know of. He was a very quiet and soft-spoken man who loved football and was a die-hard Arsenal fan,” the friend recounted. “We were all watching the game. His team scored the first goal, and he was so excited—same with the second and third goals. He jumped up in celebration each time. We didn’t know that as he sat back in his chair waiting for the final whistle, Stephen was gone.”
It was only after the match ended that others realized he was not moving. When fellow spectators began to leave and Enang remained seated, efforts were made to wake him, but he was unresponsive. He was rushed to the Police Hospital at Akim, where medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead.
Attempts to obtain an official statement from the state Police Command were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, did not respond to calls or messages regarding the incident.
