On Tuesday, the Taraba State Police Command announced that its officers turned down a bribe of over N8.5 million. The incident occurred in Jalingo, the state capital, when officers from the 40 Police Mobile Force intercepted a Toyota Starlet car with registration number YLA 321 ZY at Yaggai along the Jalingo-Yola bye-pass around 9:45 p.m. on Monday.

Joseph Eribo, the state commissioner of police, disclosed this while presenting some suspects at the state police headquarters in Jalingo. The commissioner mentioned that the suspect, Aliyu Mohammed, aged 35, from Mubi, Adamawa State, was found with a suspected ransom of N8.5 million.

During the interrogation, the suspect failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, leading to a search of his vehicle. The search uncovered a cash sum of N8,555,000, seven phones, three thousand unused MTN recharge cards, and seven amulets.

Mr. Eribo revealed that the suspect attempted to bribe the PMF personnel by offering them the entire amount to let him go, but they refused and arrested him. In another development, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the police apprehended suspects involved in kidnapping incidents in Jalingo, Lau, and Yorro.

Acting on credible information, the police operatives arrested Badon Linus, a 30-year-old male from Gwampa village, Yorro LGA, in Maihula town, Bali LGA. The suspect confessed to leading a syndicate responsible for the kidnapping of the third-class chief of Pupule, a pastor, and others.

Mr. Eribo paraded over 20 suspects accused of participating in kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes across the state. The commissioner emphasized the commitment of the Command to protect life and property in the state, mentioning the recovery of several AK-47 rifles, ammunition, transformer oil, and cables believed to be properties of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) from the suspects.
