Pope Francis' coffin is being transported through the streets of Rome on the back of a specially modified popemobile, allowing thousands of mourners to view it as it passes. The 6-kilometer (3.5-mile) route crosses the Tiber River and winds past several of Italy’s most iconic landmarks, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the ancient Roman Forum, and the Colosseum, before reaching the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial.
In a poignant reflection of Pope Francis’ lifelong dedication to marginalized communities, the coffin will be received at the basilica by about 40 individuals representing migrants, prisoners, homeless people, and members of the transgender community. This gesture underscores the late pontiff’s enduring commitment to compassion, social justice, and inclusion.
