Yesterday, residents of a satellite town near Abuja stormed a warehouse owned by the Agricultural and Rural Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration in Gwagwa, looting food items. They also targeted two private storage facilities in neighboring Karmo, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), making off with foodstuffs, roofing sheets, and other goods.

According to witnesses, the incident began around 7 am when youths raided the FCTA warehouse in the Tasha area of Gwagwa, making away with bags of grains. Jaafar Aminu, a resident, reported that the looting continued unabated until 9 am, with individuals from nearby Jiwa and Karmo joining in.

Christopher Agbo, another resident, noted that aside from food items, the looters also took steel fence sheets, doors, and roofing sheets from the government warehouse. Concerns were raised by some locals about the safety of the looted grains, suspecting them to be unfit for consumption due to possible spoilage.

This incident marks a recurrence, as the warehouse had previously been targeted during the COVID-19 lockdown, resulting in the theft of grains and intervention equipment like pumping machines.

Shehu Muhammad, a resident of Karmo, disclosed that the two looted stores in the community belonged to individuals from Sabuwar-Unguwa and Rogo areas.

Responding to inquiries, Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, assured that the police had managed to bring the situation under control.

These events unfold against a backdrop of nationwide protests organized by civil society groups and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in response to the escalating cost-of-living crisis.

Further illustrating the severity of the situation, residents of Zaria, Kaduna State, reportedly intercepted a truck carrying foodstuffs on Friday, seizing cartons of noodles. Similarly, on February 22, during a protest by fish vendors protesting rising food prices, miscreants attacked a trailer transporting foodstuffs in Suleja, Niger State.
