Ballia, Uttar Pradesh – A retired Army soldier, 62-year-old Devendra Kumar, was allegedly murdered and hacked into six pieces by his wife Maya Devi, 44, with the help of her lover and two others in a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves through the community.

According to police, the gruesome murder took place in Bahadurpur locality, where the victim was killed inside his home. His body was dismembered—both arms, legs, and head were severed—and the parts were dumped across various locations to obstruct identification efforts. The crime came to light on Saturday after locals discovered severed limbs wrapped in polythene in a field near Khareed village under the jurisdiction of Sikandarpur Police Station.

Initially, Maya Devi attempted to mislead authorities by lodging a missing person report on May 10 at Ballia City Kotwali Police Station. However, the investigation took a dramatic turn when her own daughter, Ambli Gautam, accused her of murdering her husband.

Following the daughter’s statement, Maya Devi was arrested and charged with murder. During interrogation, she confessed to the killing, implicating her lover, truck driver Anil Yadav, and two accomplices—Mithilesh Patel and Satish Yadav. Mithilesh Patel was arrested on Monday, while Anil Yadav and Satish Yadav were apprehended on Tuesday.

The torso of the deceased was later recovered from a well in Khareed Darauli village, based on information provided by Maya Devi.

While attempting to flee, Anil Yadav and Satish Yadav were intercepted near Town Polytechnic in Parikhara during a routine vehicle check. The duo opened fire at police officers, prompting retaliatory action. Anil Yadav sustained a bullet injury to the leg and is currently receiving treatment at the district hospital. A country-made pistol, a spent cartridge, and a live round were seized from his possession. Police also recovered the murder weapon from Satish Yadav.

Ballia Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh confirmed that the motive behind the murder was Maya Devi’s extramarital affair with Anil Yadav.

This incident adds to a disturbing pattern of similarly brutal domestic murders in Uttar Pradesh in recent months. In March, a woman in Meerut killed her husband, a former merchant navy officer, with the help of her lover, concealing his body in a cement-filled drum. Last month in Deoria, a woman and her lover murdered her husband ten days after his return from Dubai, dismembered the body, and abandoned the remains in a suitcase, which was later identified by an airline tag. In another case from Auraiya, a newlywed man was murdered just 15 days into marriage by his wife and her lover, who had hired a contract killer.
