Secondary school student allegedly commits suicide over unwanted pregnancy

A Grade 10 student from Maladah Senior Secondary School in Kunkujang Jatta-ya, West Coast Region, Gambia, reportedly took her own life last night due to an unwanted pregnancy.

As per local media reports, the student, identified as Mamy Jassey, passed away after allegedly ingesting a poisonous substance around 6 pm on Sunday, April 28, 2024. She was swiftly taken to a private clinic near Lamin Lodge, where a nurse declared her deceased.

During preparations for Mamy's burial, a lab technician residing in her neighborhood observed that she was exhibiting 'signs of life' upon checking her pulse.

The lab technician and several neighbors acted promptly to transport Mamy to Banjulunding Health Center, where she was pronounced dead.
