A small private aircraft crashed near Beverly Regional Airport in Massachusetts on Thursday morning, resulting in one fatality and leaving another person critically injured.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Sam Fonzo Drive, just outside the Beverly Regional Airport. Authorities from the Beverly Police and Fire Departments confirmed that the aircraft—a Mooney M20, a fixed-wing, four-seat model—was carrying two men when it went down. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The identities of the pilot and passenger have not yet been released. Fortunately, no injuries were reported on the ground.
The aircraft was found heavily damaged, resting against a utility pole. Preliminary reports from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) indicate that the plane crashed under unknown circumstances. Investigators arrived at the site to begin documenting the scene, and the aircraft will be transported to a secure facility for further analysis.
A preliminary report on the incident is expected within two weeks, the NTSB noted.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a puff of smoke before the plane began its descent, raising speculation that engine failure may have been a factor.
Beverly Police Chief John Lelacheur commented on the crash, noting that the Juneteenth holiday meant fewer businesses were open in the area at the time. Authorities plan to review surveillance footage from nearby establishments and continue the investigation into Friday.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane had departed from Beverly and was en route to Ticonderoga Municipal Airport in New York, approximately 100 miles north of Albany.
Beverly, a Boston suburb with a population of over 42,000, was shaken by the incident, which follows another aviation tragedy in May when five people were killed in a mid-air collision involving two helicopters over Finland.
