Two people were rescued just moments before their SUV was engulfed in flames after crashing into a Domino’s Pizza in Herriman, Utah, rupturing a gas line and triggering a powerful explosion on Saturday night.
According to the Unified Fire Authority, Utah’s largest fire agency, the SUV was involved in a three-vehicle collision before veering off the road and crashing into a commercial building that housed Domino’s, Jimmy John’s, and Supercuts. The impact ruptured a gas line and caused a fire, which led to a sudden explosion that sent debris flying and destroyed the pizza restaurant. The other two businesses sustained significant damage.
A dramatic video released by the fire department captured the moment of the explosion as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. Fire officials confirmed that just before the blast, "two courageous bystanders risked their lives" to pull the driver and a passenger from the burning SUV. The heroic intervention likely saved both individuals’ lives.
Fortunately, the building was unoccupied at the time of the crash, and no injuries were reported as a result of the explosion. However, multiple individuals involved in the original three-car accident were transported to a hospital. No firefighters were injured during the response.
The crash occurred in Herriman, a city located approximately 30 minutes southwest of Salt Lake City, near Riverton. The cause of the initial collision remains under investigation.
Fire crews continue to assess the structural damage to the commercial complex, and authorities are working to determine the full extent of the fire’s impact. The Unified Fire Authority praised the quick actions of the bystanders and the coordinated response by emergency personnel that prevented further casualties.
