A 45-year-old lecturer at the Taraba State College of Health Technology, Takum, identified as Samson Philip, was found dead in what authorities suspect to be a case of suicide. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at his residence in Bete, located in the Takum Local Government Area of the state.

According to family sources, Philip was discovered with a rope tied around his neck, while a bottle containing an unidentified substance was found near the scene, suggesting a possible combination of methods used in the suspected suicide.

The tragic death of the lecturer has left the academic community and residents of Takum in deep shock and mourning. Colleagues, students, and neighbors have expressed disbelief, describing Philip as a calm, intelligent, and dedicated educator who made a significant impact on campus and in the lives of his students.

A friend of the deceased, speaking under anonymity, shared emotional reflections on the tragedy. “Earlier today, we were at Bete in Takum LGA to bid Samson Philip farewell. He committed suicide for reasons best known to him and God. People are speculating, but only Samson and God know what truly happened,” the friend said.

He continued, “Perhaps he was struggling in silence. Maybe he thought about talking to a pastor but feared it would become a sermon. Or maybe he considered confiding in a close friend, only to worry that his secret would spread. We may never know.”

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Taraba State Police Command, James Lanshen, stated that the case had been reported and that the police were awaiting a comprehensive report from the Divisional Police Officer in Takum before issuing an official statement.

“The matter has been reported to us. We are waiting for full details from the DPO in Takum before making an official statement,” Lanshen said.

In the wake of his death, tributes have poured in on social media from students, colleagues, and former associates, many of whom praised the late Samson Philip for his commitment to education and described him as a humble and compassionate figure.

The incident has also reignited conversations around mental health awareness, emotional support, and the urgent need for accessible counseling services in educational institutions across Nigeria.
