A 15-year-old student was killed and several others injured in a tragic crash that unfolded during afternoon pick-up at Campbell Hall School, a private K–12 campus in Studio City, California, on Wednesday.
The incident occurred just after 3 p.m. in the carpool line at the school’s rear parking lot, located at 4533 Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Students were being picked up by parents, guardians, and siblings as the school day came to a close when the crash took place.
Authorities say a green Rivian SUV, driven by a student who was at the school to pick up her younger sister, accidentally rear-ended a white SUV in front of her. The impact occurred just as a 15-year-old boy was walking between the two vehicles, pinning him between them.
Los Angeles Police Department Lieutenant Matthew Bielski said investigators believe the victim may have been walking to a nearby vehicle he intended to enter. The teen’s father was reportedly at the school at the time and witnessed the collision. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the boy succumbed to his injuries.

“It was determined to be a tragic accident. No citations will be issued,” Bielski confirmed.
The fatal collision happened in full view of students and school staff, triggering immediate responses from emergency personnel. Aerial footage showed a tarp and canopy over the crash site between the two SUVs.
The Los Angeles Fire Department deployed the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team to the school and to the hospital to provide emotional support to grieving families, students, and witnesses. LAFD Captain Adam Van Gerpen said the team is offering recovery assistance to those affected.
The crash also caused a chain reaction involving other vehicles in the carpool line, leading to minor injuries for two teenagers and three adults. These secondary collisions occurred just as students were entering other cars to head home.
Authorities emphasized that the driver of the Rivian SUV, also a student, did not act with intent, and there was no indication of reckless behavior or criminal wrongdoing.
Out of respect for the victim and to support the school community, Campbell Hall School canceled all classes and final exams for Thursday. However, the campus will be open from 10 a.m. to noon for grieving students, parents, and teachers. The school is also offering access to counselors and chaplains for emotional support.
The name of the student who died has not yet been released.
