A priest in the Diocese of Brownsville, Texas, has been apprehended following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a minor.

Brownsville Bishop Daniel Flores conveyed in a statement last week that diocesan authorities had “received an accusation of sexual misconduct with a minor against Father Fernando Gonzalez.”

Flores received the report in early February from the diocesan victim’s assistance coordinator. Subsequently, he “suspended [Gonzalez] from active ministry” and “barred him from engaging in any priestly duties anywhere.”

“The individual who came forward, now an adult, consulted with the Diocesan Victim’s Assistance Coordinator and was advised to inform the authorities,” the bishop noted. “The investigation is now in the hands of law enforcement and is ongoing. The diocese pledges full cooperation with the inquiry.”

Law enforcement apprehended the priest last week. The Cameron County Sheriff’s Department has arrested Gonzalez on charges of sexual abuse of a minor and “trafficking of persons.” His total bond is reportedly set at $600,000.

The Cameron County District Attorney’s office informed local media that as part of his bond conditions, Gonzalez “must wear an ankle monitor upon release, surrender his passport, and remain within Cameron County” pending the case.

Prior to the charges, Gonzalez served as pastor of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Brownsville. As of Monday, he has been removed from the parish website’s list of staff.

“I am deeply saddened and urge you to join me in prayer for the individual who came forward, their family, and all affected parties, including parishioners and clergy throughout our diocese who minister to their faithful with fidelity and compassion,” Flores expressed in his statement.
