A 42-year-old Texas man discovered he was legally married without his knowledge after his ex-girlfriend allegedly filed a marriage certificate following their breakup, prompting a criminal investigation and her subsequent arrest.

The man contacted Beverly Hills Police on Friday after finding a Bath & Body Works gift bag at his home. Inside the package was a photo of his former girlfriend, 36-year-old Kristin Marie Spearman of Waco, holding a marriage license that listed the two as legally married. Also included was a copy of a filed marriage certificate, which had been processed by the county clerk’s office, according to police.

The man told authorities that he and Spearman had been in a relationship and had jointly obtained marriage licenses earlier in the month in anticipation of a wedding. However, the relationship ended after a serious argument, leading to their separation before any ceremony took place.

According to investigators, Spearman allegedly proceeded with the marriage process on her own. Police say she convinced a local reverend to officiate the license and sign it, despite the man’s absence and without his consent—an action that violated legal marriage procedures requiring the physical presence and acknowledgment of both parties.

Authorities determined that Spearman had unlawfully filed the documents with the county clerk, creating a legally binding marriage without the man’s knowledge or participation.

Spearman was arrested at her residence on a third-degree felony charge of stalking and was taken into custody at a local jail. Investigators are continuing to assess whether additional charges may be warranted.
