An explosion at the Biscailuz Center Academy Training facility in East Los Angeles claimed the lives of three veteran deputies on Friday morning, marking the deadliest day for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department since its founding in 1857.

The blast occurred at approximately 7:25 a.m. local time at the department’s training site, Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed during a press conference. While the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation, law enforcement sources indicated the incident may have involved a bomb squad handling explosive materials. Luna, however, declined to confirm those details, stating that the affected area had only recently been cleared as safe for investigators to enter.

The identities of the three deputies have not yet been released, but Sheriff Luna said the fallen officers had a combined 74 years of service within the department. “This is, unfortunately, the largest loss of life for us as the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department since 1857,” Luna said, adding that the investigation could take several days or weeks.

Federal and state agencies have joined the investigation. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that she had spoken with Sheriff Luna and U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli about the "horrific incident." Bondi confirmed that federal agents are on the ground assisting with the inquiry.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office have been deployed to support the ongoing investigation. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also confirmed the involvement of the Los Angeles Fire Department’s arson unit and the LAPD’s bomb squad.

Images from the scene and witness accounts suggest a high-impact explosion, though details remain limited as officials work to piece together what led to the tragic event. As of now, no other injuries or fatalities have been confirmed beyond the three deputies killed.
