Three people are in a life-threatening condition following a suspected arson attack at a restaurant in Ilford, according to police.

The blaze broke out shortly after 9 p.m. on Friday at Indian Aroma on Woodford Avenue, Gants Hill, leaving five people injured — three women and two men. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service treated the victims at the scene before rushing them to hospital.

Authorities confirmed that two patients were taken to a major trauma centre, while three others were admitted to local hospitals. All five were treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

London Fire Brigade said part of the ground floor of the restaurant was damaged, but nine other people managed to escape before the flames spread. Fire crews from Ilford, Hainault, Leytonstone, and Woodford responded after control officers received seven emergency calls. The fire was fully extinguished by 10:32 p.m.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers from the Met’s Central Specialist Crime North unit said specialist detectives are working quickly to determine the circumstances of the fire. He assured residents that a large police presence will remain in the area and encouraged anyone with concerns to speak directly with officers.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who serves as MP for Ilford North, thanked emergency services for their swift response and urged residents to avoid the area while investigations continue.
