A tourist has been hospitalized after falling from the courtyard of Agios Georgios Church, perched atop Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in Athens. The incident occurred yesterday morning when the man, believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, was reportedly taking a selfie and was swept by strong winds, causing him to lose his balance and plunge onto the rocks and stone-paved steps below.
Emergency responders, including police, a motorcycle unit, and ambulance crews, rushed to the scene. Witnesses said the man was conscious and blinking when paramedics arrived, before being transported to hospital where he remains in stable condition.

The church, a popular tourist destination offering panoramic views of Athens, was closed to visitors for the remainder of the day following the fall. An eyewitness described the scene, recalling how a tourist woman alerted them to the accident and requested an ambulance. “We stayed with him until the rescuers arrived. They took him away conscious and transferred him to the hospital,” the witness said. Another bystander noted seeing the victim bleeding and lying on the landing below, adding, “It was a bit hard to watch.”
This is the latest in a series of selfie-related accidents involving tourists at iconic landmarks. In May, an American tourist living in Taiwan suffered life-threatening injuries after falling onto a sharp metal spike at Rome’s Colosseum while attempting a selfie, the spike piercing his spine before he lost consciousness.
