A Kentucky State Trooper and several others were injured Saturday in a series of violent incidents in Lexington that began with a trooper being shot and ended with a suspect deceased at a local church.

According to Kentucky State Police, the suspect opened fire on a state trooper in Fayette County at approximately 11:36 a.m., prompting a manhunt involving both state troopers and officers from the Lexington Police Department. Authorities located the suspect shortly afterward at Richmond Road Baptist Church.

“There are multiple victims at the church, and EMS is on the scene providing care,” Kentucky State Police confirmed in a statement. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials did not release details about how the suspect died or the condition and identities of the victims at the church. The condition of the injured trooper also remains unclear.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear acknowledged the unfolding violence and confirmed a second shooting took place at the church. “Please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let’s give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police,” he wrote. Beshear added that more information would be shared as it becomes available.

Authorities are also investigating whether the incidents are connected to a separate shooting that occurred near Blue Grass Airport around the same time. The Lexington Fire Department responded to that scene at 11:39 a.m. and transported one person with serious injuries to a nearby hospital.

Blue Grass Airport issued a statement confirming an “incident” on a roadway located on airport property. As a precaution, the terminal and nearby roadways were temporarily closed but have since reopened.

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman released a statement following the day’s violence, offering prayers for the victims and their families. He praised first responders for their quick action and affirmed that his office stands ready to support ongoing investigations.

“This is another reminder of the grave danger we ask law enforcement to face every single day,” Coleman said.

Investigations remain active across multiple scenes in Lexington as authorities work to determine the full scope and motive behind the day’s events.
