A prominent University of California, Berkeley professor was shot and killed outside his ex-wife’s home in Athens, Greece, on July 4 during an ongoing child custody battle. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large.

Przemyslaw Jeziorski, 43, a tenured professor at the Haas School of Business, was gunned down in the suburb of Papagou, a residential area northeast of the Greek capital. He was shot five times in the chest and neck, according to reports. The suspect, described as tall and athletic, reportedly fled the scene on foot.

Jeziorski had traveled to Greece for legal proceedings concerning custody of his two children. His ex-wife, who returned to Greece six years ago, reportedly told police she was unaware of anyone who might want to harm him.

A crowdfunding page created by his brother, Lukasz Jeziorski, described the professor as a dedicated father and respected academic. “He was the victim of a terrible crime, and the perpetrator is still at large,” he wrote. “Przemek was a loving father to two young children and a beloved professor at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. He loved teaching and sharing his passion for the intricacies of marketing analytics and marketing science with his students.”

Berkeley Haas Dean Jennifer Chatman expressed sorrow over the professor’s death, describing him as a valued member of the academic community. “We are heartbroken by the news of the tragic and sudden death of Professor Przemyslaw Jeziorski,” she said. “While authorities are investigating what happened, our focus is on supporting our community during this difficult period. My heart goes out to Przemek’s family and loved ones. We will miss him.”

Jeziorski joined the Berkeley Haas faculty in 2012 as an assistant professor of marketing. He held academic degrees from the SGH Warsaw School of Economics, the University of Arizona, the University of Chicago, and Stanford University. His research spanned quantitative marketing, industrial organization, antitrust and regulation, digital marketing, and financial technology.

Greek police have yet to identify a suspect in the killing. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Authorities have appealed for witnesses and are pursuing leads in the area surrounding the crime scene.
