A married school principal in South Wales has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison after attacking a fellow teacher with a wrench, driven by overwhelming sexual jealousy stemming from a complicated love triangle. Anthony John Felton, 54, ambushed 51-year-old teacher Richard Pyke at a school in Aberavon, approaching him silently from behind before pulling a metal wrench from his vest pocket and striking him on the head.

CCTV footage captured the assault, showing Pyke falling to the floor and attempting to defend himself by kicking as Felton continued swinging the weapon. The attack was described by the sentencing judge at Swansea Crown Court as a premeditated act fueled by rage and jealousy. Judge Paul Thomas told Felton, "Ultimately, the trigger for your act of extreme violence was of your own doing. The overwhelming sexual jealousy arising from an adulterous affair and the uncontrollable rage it created in you."

Felton, who is married, was reportedly enraged that Pyke had been involved with a female teacher with whom Felton had also recently had a relationship. Felton further believed he might be the father of the female teacher's child, contributing to his emotional instability leading up to the attack.

Despite the ferocity of the ambush, Pyke sustained only minor injuries and has since been granted a restraining order against Felton. Abul Hussain of the Crown Prosecution Service commented that "the level of unprovoked violence, from a professional in the workplace, was shocking," and emphasized that it was fortunate the attack did not result in life-changing injuries or death.

Felton’s sentencing reflects the serious breach of trust and professional conduct expected within educational institutions, highlighting the grave consequences of personal disputes spilling into the workplace.
