Three people are in critical condition after a vehicle drove into a crowd on Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, Los Angeles, early Saturday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The collision occurred around 2 a.m. Pacific Time when a grey vehicle struck a taco cart and then ran into a large group of people gathered outside a nightclub. Photos from the scene show the damaged vehicle resting on the sidewalk, surrounded by debris and emergency personnel. Several individuals could be seen sitting on blankets while firefighters treated the wounded.

Sgt. Travis Ward, Watch Commander for LAPD’s Central Traffic Division, confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was shot following the crash and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was taken into surgery. Due to his medical condition, authorities have not yet been able to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Witnesses inside the nightclub reported hearing a “loud bang,” which initially sparked fears of gunfire. One man described the scene as chaotic, with people “laying down, unconscious, bleeding out.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department dispatched 124 personnel to the scene. According to Captain Adam VanGerpen, public information officer for LAFD, a total of 28 people were injured. In addition to the three critically injured, six were reported in serious condition, and 19 were listed in fair condition.

Sgt. Ward stated that it was too early to determine whether the crash was intentional or the result of the driver losing control of the vehicle. The investigation remains ongoing. No fatalities have been confirmed.
