BROOKLYN, NY — A 36-year-old woman was shot and killed Wednesday night in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, just blocks from the Barclays Center, according to the New York Police Department.
The fatal shooting occurred around 10:22 p.m. near the intersection of Carlton Avenue and Pacific Street. Police said the victim was struck in the head when an unidentified gunman opened fire. It remains unclear whether she was the intended target or an innocent bystander.

Responding officers arrived at the scene following a report of shots fired and found the woman lying on the street with a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency medical services pronounced her dead at the scene.
The suspect fled the area on foot and remains at large, police said. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
The location of the shooting is less than a third of a mile—approximately a five-minute walk—from the Barclays Center, where the NBA held its draft event on Wednesday night.
According to NYPD crime data, this marks the second homicide of the year within the jurisdiction of the 78th Precinct.
