Woman’s Body Discovered in Michigan Home After Reported Break-In

Authorities in Michigan are investigating the discovery of a woman’s body in a residence following a reported break-in on Saturday, June 28, in Spaulding Township, Saginaw County.

Saginaw County Undersheriff Mike Gomez confirmed that deputies were called to a home in the 3000 block of South Michigan Avenue at around 4 p.m. after the homeowner reported a suspected burglary. The man, who was not at home at the time, contacted police after receiving a phone call from his home landline while away—triggering concerns that someone may have entered his residence.

Upon arrival, deputies observed a pried-open window and conducted a sweep of the home but initially found no one inside. The homeowner, who asked to remain anonymous, noted that Valerie Basner, a former roommate, had continued to access the property despite no longer living there. However, authorities said there were no immediate indications of her presence during the first visit.

A few hours later, the homeowner discovered Basner’s body in a concealed shaft area near a trap door inside the residence and immediately called 911 a second time. Deputies returned to the scene, and the body was recovered.

“I am just devastated. I am in a state of shock, and my heart pours out for my sister,” said Matthew Basner, the victim’s brother.

Preliminary findings revealed no signs of foul play. Authorities have not released any further details regarding the circumstances surrounding her death. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the official cause.

The investigation remains ongoing.
