A devastating family tragedy unfolded in Oddanchatram, Dindigul district, India, where four members of a single household were found dead in what police believe to be a murder-suicide triggered by a woman’s alleged illicit relationship. The victims include two minor girls, their grandmother, and great-grandmother.
According to police sources, 25-year-old Pavithra had been living with her mother Kaleeswari (45) and grandmother Chellammal (65) in Chinna Kulipatti village after separating from her husband, Prabhakaran, a trader from Aravakuruchi in Karur. The couple, married for ten years, had two daughters—Lathikasri, 7, and Deepthi, 5—but marital disputes reportedly led to Pavithra walking out of the relationship in April, moving back to her family home with the children.
Despite repeated efforts by Kaleeswari and Chellammal to mediate and restore the marriage, reconciliation attempts failed. Tensions within the family escalated when Pavithra allegedly entered into a new romantic relationship with another man. This new relationship reportedly caused significant friction within the household, with both women expressing distress over the perceived dishonor it brought to the family. Community members also tried to intervene but were unsuccessful in resolving the conflict.
The situation took a tragic turn when Pavithra allegedly abandoned her children and eloped with the man on Tuesday. Police believe that this act pushed her mother and grandmother into a state of extreme emotional distress. That same night, Kaleeswari and Chellammal are suspected of strangling the two young girls to death before taking their own lives.
Neighbors became concerned on Wednesday morning after noticing the house remained closed for an extended period. They alerted the Idayakottai police, who arrived at the scene, forcibly entered the home, and discovered the lifeless bodies of the two women and the children.
The remains were transported to Dindigul Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination. A case has been registered, and a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the full sequence of events leading up to the incident.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the tragic consequences of unresolved domestic tensions and mental health stress.
