Worshippers at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Liberty Parish in the Somolu area of Lagos State narrowly escaped death on Monday after a two-storey building under construction collapsed during a concrete decking process and partially fell on the church premises.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident, stating that one of the building’s pillars collapsed onto the church located at 5 Craig Street, Somolu. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries recorded.
Upon arrival at the scene, LASEMA’s Cobra response team discovered that the structure was one of two buildings being developed on the site. The collapsed building gave way during the concrete decking process, causing a significant portion of the structure to impact the adjacent church building.

“No life was lost and no injuries recorded, as the workers reportedly escaped the scene unscathed before emergency responders arrived,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. He added that search and rescue operations were immediately conducted to ensure no individuals were trapped beneath the debris.
The church was holding worship activities at the time of the collapse, but all congregants were able to flee without harm. Emergency teams carried out extensive checks, confirmed that no one was trapped, and began public sensitisation efforts to ensure that the area remains secure and that residents stay away from the unstable site.
The cause of the collapse has not yet been determined, and investigations are ongoing.
This incident follows a previous building collapse reported in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on May 29, where three family members — 16-year-old Maleek, 13-year-old Ameerah, and their 73-year-old uncle Bolaji — lost their lives after a two-storey structure crumbled in the Ota-Ona community. That building was reportedly financed by a UK-based relative and overseen by the late septuagenarian.
The recurring structural failures have intensified concerns about building safety and oversight across Lagos, especially with many ongoing private construction projects in residential neighborhoods.
