A 21-year-old woman, Shraddha Das, suffered serious burn injuries after being attacked with acid by an estranged friend in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh, in what authorities are calling a jealousy-fueled assault.
The attack occurred late on Sunday night, June 29, 2025, around 10:30 p.m., in Awadhpuri Colony under the jurisdiction of Gaurighat police station.
According to law enforcement, the accused, 22-year-old Ishita Sahu, called Shraddha outside her home. After a short conversation at the gate, Ishita allegedly threw acid on her before fleeing the scene.

Shraddha sustained 50% burn injuries and was rushed to a private hospital. Medical staff confirmed she is now in stable condition and receiving treatment.
Initial investigations suggest jealousy as the primary motive behind the attack. Police sources revealed that the two women had previously shared a close friendship but had ceased communication in recent months. Shraddha had reportedly blocked Ishita’s phone number and cut off contact two months prior to the incident.
“Statements collected during the inquiry suggest that Ishita was envious of Shraddha’s progress and independence,” police said, noting that the accused may have harbored deep resentment toward the victim’s accomplishments.

Shraddha’s mother said the attack was fueled by long-standing jealousy. “Shraddha had everything—comforts, stability, and ambition. Ishita had none of it. She wanted everything that Shraddha had,” she stated.
Police confirmed that Ishita Sahu has been arrested and is currently under interrogation. Efforts are also underway to trace and detain her parents, who are reportedly absconding.
The incident has sparked outrage locally and reignited calls for stricter enforcement against acid attacks, particularly those stemming from personal vendettas.
