Authorities in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, launched an intensive manhunt on Wednesday following a shooting that left three people dead and three others injured at a townhouse complex just outside Fredericksburg, approximately 65 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening, prompting multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the residential area. Deputies from the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, where all six victims were found outside. Three were pronounced dead, while the remaining three were transported to area hospitals with gunshot wounds. The condition of the injured victims has not yet been disclosed.
Officials believe the shooting may have been carried out by more than one suspect. As of Wednesday, no arrests had been made, and authorities have not released any information regarding a possible motive.
“There’s dozens upon dozens of officers out actively looking for suspects and preserving the crime scene,” said Maj. Elizabeth Scott, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. She added that the investigation would continue through the night until the suspects are located.
Residents in the immediate area were urged to stay indoors while law enforcement conducted the search and secured the scene. Authorities also issued a public appeal for witnesses to come forward and submit any video footage that may aid in the investigation.
The shooting prompted precautionary measures in local school districts. Both Fredericksburg City Public Schools and Spotsylvania County Public Schools announced two-hour delays for Wednesday morning. School officials cited the emotional impact of the tragedy on students, families, and staff.
Fredericksburg schools stated the delay would allow time to "prepare our buildings and staff to welcome students with the care and support they may need during this difficult time." Spotsylvania schools said additional deputies and members of the sheriff’s office would be present at each high school to offer support and maintain a visible security presence.
