Anambra govt. vows to punish officials who brutalized man in viral video
The Anambra State Government has responded to a disturbing viral video depicting a man being subjected to brutality by operatives of the Special Anambra Anti-Touting Squad (SASA).
In the footage, Wilfred Ezike, also known as Mgbilimgba, from Onitsha, Anambra State, is seen enduring severe beatings reportedly inflicted by SASA members, sparking outrage across social media platforms.
Prof. Chukwuma Soludo initiated the state Anti-touts Squad (SASA) in 2023 to combat the growing issue of touting in the region. However, this recent incident has brought the actions of SASA under scrutiny.
The video captures the SASA operatives mercilessly striking Wilfred with a pestle, causing him to bleed profusely. Despite Wilfred's pleas for mercy and explanations, the assailants show no remorse.
Reacting to the distressing video, Chikodi Anarah, the Anambra State Commissioner for Homeland Affairs, released a statement on Wednesday, March 13, affirming the government's commitment to address the situation.
"We are investigating the matter and will punish the erring SASA operatives," stated Commissioner Anarah. "Our government upholds the rule of law, and those responsible for this reprehensible act will face appropriate consequences."
Anarah's statement acknowledged the public outcry and diverse reactions to the incident. He emphasized the importance of adhering to legal protocols, even in cases involving individuals with criminal records like Wilfred Ezike.
"While Wilfred Ezike's alleged criminal activities have been documented, nothing justifies the brutality inflicted upon him," Anarah continued. "Our aim is to ensure justice is served while upholding the principles of a lawful society."
The commissioner highlighted the need for SASA operatives to operate within the boundaries of the law, despite any perceived provocation. He also addressed speculation surrounding Wilfred's arrest and the alleged petition he filed against SASA, affirming the government's commitment to transparency and due process.
In conclusion, Anarah reiterated the government's determination to eradicate criminal elements while respecting human rights and lawful procedures.
