BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA — Camilo Nuin, an 18-year-old footballer for Buenos Aires-based club San Telmo, has tragically died following knee surgery, the club confirmed on Wednesday evening. The exact cause of his death remains unknown, and an investigation is currently underway.
Nuin, a promising left-footed midfielder, had previously played in the youth academies of two of Argentina’s most prestigious clubs, Boca Juniors and Independiente, before joining San Telmo in 2022. He was reportedly undergoing a routine surgical procedure to treat meniscal and cruciate ligament injuries—common injuries among athletes—intended to restore joint stability and function.
Local media reports indicate that medical authorities are now reviewing the circumstances surrounding the procedure and Nuin's unexpected death.

San Telmo issued a heartfelt statement mourning the young player: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Camilo Ernesto Nuin, a player in our youth and reserve divisions, who was undergoing surgery today. The club will remain closed today as a sign of mourning. We join his family, friends, and team-mates in this difficult time and remain at their disposal for anything they may need.”
Tributes have poured in from across the Argentine football community. Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), expressed his condolences on social media, calling it “a very sad piece of news that shakes the entire football world.”
The AFA also issued an official message: “The Argentine Football Association, through its president Claudio Tapia and executive committee, expresses its sorrow at the death of Camilo Nuin and extends its condolences to the player's family.”
Nuin’s passing has cast a shadow over Argentina’s football scene, as fans and fellow athletes mourn the loss of a rising talent.
