A Boeing 737 operated by Norwegian was forced to make an emergency landing on Tuesday morning after an explosion occurred shortly after takeoff from Stockholm Arlanda Airport in Sweden. The aircraft, carrying 181 passengers and bound for Paris, circled the city before returning to the airport.

The loud bang was heard during takeoff, and debris was later discovered on the runway. Emergency services, including police and paramedics, rushed to the scene. Investigations revealed that the explosion had damaged one of the plane’s tires.

“The plane took off as planned, but when it was in the air, the pilot needed to turn around and go back to Arlanda due to technical problems,” a Norwegian spokesperson said, adding that the pilot had prepared for a hard landing. Despite initial fears, the aircraft landed safely without incident.

Witnesses at the airport reported a buildup of planes waiting to take off as the runway was closed for inspection. Aircraft were diverted to other runways while vehicles cleared debris. “It is hard to speculate how serious this is. We take all such incidents seriously. It is very unusual,” the spokesperson added.

Passenger Maya Carenco, who lives in Paris, described the moment of the explosion: “When [the plane] started, it shook a great deal. It shook and vibrated a lot. My legs are still vibrating. When we were in the air, I did not know what happened, but now that we have, I’m a bit shocked.”

Carenco said her mother and grandmother monitored the flight via a plane-tracking website and were concerned, though she credited the calm response of the pilot and crew with easing passenger fears during the incident.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the explosion and assess the extent of the damage. It remains unclear if any passengers sustained injuries.
