At least one person has died and six others remain in critical condition after a passenger bus collided with a wandering elephant in Uganda. The tragic accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. near Karuma as the vehicle was traveling from Gulu to Kampala.
Authorities confirmed the driver of the bus sustained fatal injuries when the front of the vehicle caved in from the impact. Six passengers were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while several others suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the crash was caused by an African elephant that stepped into the road. Witnesses reported that the animal was part of a herd of at least four elephants. The injured elephant fled the scene, and UWA teams are now searching to assess its condition and provide treatment if necessary.
The mangled bus was later impounded and taken to Dima Police Station for further investigation. Officials noted that wild animals frequently cross the busy highway, which has been the site of previous accidents. In November, a speeding truck killed an elephant in Karuma National Park under similar circumstances.

African elephants can reach over 13 feet in height and weigh more than 11,000 kilograms, making collisions especially devastating. The latest incident has renewed calls for stronger safety measures along the Gulu-Kampala highway. Local officials and the bus company have urged UWA to install electric fencing or dig protective trenches to deter animals from crossing into traffic.
