Carlos Alcaraz claimed his second US Open championship on Sunday, defeating Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a commanding performance at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The victory marks Alcaraz’s second Grand Slam triumph of 2025, following his French Open win earlier this year, also against Sinner.

The final began after a 30-minute delay due to heightened security surrounding former U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit. Once play got underway, Alcaraz immediately took control, employing an aggressive style and mixing his shots to keep Sinner unsettled. His serve and forehand dictated the pace, while Sinner struggled with consistency and lost several service games in the opening set.

Sinner rallied in the second, finding his rhythm and using his powerful forehand to push Alcaraz deep into the corners. He also executed sharp drop shots and passing shots at the net to even the match at one set apiece. With the players splitting the first two sets, many anticipated another marathon encounter similar to their French Open classic.

However, Alcaraz dominated the third set, breaking early to establish a 3-0 lead and using a combination of heavy forehands and delicate drop shots to leave Sinner off balance. He sealed the set 6-1, placing the defending champion in a difficult position.

In the fourth set, Sinner held serve to stay in contention but failed to secure a crucial break. Alcaraz continued to pressure him on return games and broke serve four times throughout the match. Serving for the championship, Alcaraz delivered an ace into the corner that Sinner could not return, closing out the victory.

The win denied Sinner a chance to defend his US Open crown and repeat his Wimbledon triumph over Alcaraz earlier this year. With the victory, Alcaraz will overtake Sinner as the new ATP world No. 1.

The 2025 season has been defined by the Alcaraz-Sinner rivalry, with all four Grand Slam titles split between the two. Alcaraz prevailed at the French Open and US Open, while Sinner won Wimbledon. Their head-to-head record now stands at 10-5 in Alcaraz’s favor, with the Spaniard winning seven of their last eight meetings.
