Delta Community Razed After Killing Of Soldiers
According to Channels Television, the Okuama coastal community where the soldiers were killed was razed on Sunday morning. It remains unclear who destroyed the houses or if there were casualties, but residents have fled to the neighboring Ughelli community for safety, fearing reprisals by soldiers.
The Nigerian military confirmed the killing of the soldiers, including four officers, in a statement on Saturday. The victims included the commanding officer, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers.
The soldiers were deployed to restore order between two warring communities: Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the military spokesperson, stated in his Saturday statement that the military would investigate and bring the culprits to justice. There is no indication that soldiers were responsible for the burning of the Okuama community at this time.
Mr. Gusau mentioned that some suspects had been arrested and assured that the military remains committed to maintaining peace and security in the country. The matter has been reported to the Delta State government.
Following the military's statement, the Delta government also confirmed the soldiers' killing and pledged to collaborate with authorities to ensure the perpetrators face consequences.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed condolences to the military and the families of the slain soldiers, condemning the violence and emphasizing the state's commitment to the rule of law and human decency. He vowed to take all necessary measures to bring the perpetrators to justice and maintain peace and security in Delta State.
