Billionaire media mogul David Geffen has filed for divorce from his husband, David Armstrong, less than two years after their high-profile marriage. The 82-year-old entertainment executive, who boasts a net worth of $8.7 billion, cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
Geffen, known for co-founding Asylum Records, Geffen Records, DGC Records, and DreamWorks Records, married 32-year-old Armstrong—also known by his performance name Donovan Michaels—in a private Beverly Hills ceremony in 2023. The couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage.

Despite the absence of a prenup, Armstrong may not walk away with a significant portion of Geffen's fortune. Geffen, who has been retired for 15 years, derives most of his income from investments in stocks and equities. Under California law, dividends from stocks are considered separate property, meaning Armstrong likely won’t be entitled to a large cash settlement.
However, he will receive spousal support for one year—half the duration of their marriage—as mandated by California’s spousal support rules. Geffen is also expected to cover Armstrong’s legal fees and alimony, according to divorce filings.

The pair reportedly met in 2020 when Armstrong worked as Geffen’s personal trainer. Their relationship quickly progressed, culminating in a wedding that drew significant attention due to their age gap and Geffen’s high-profile status.
Armstrong’s background came under public scrutiny in 2023. Born David Armstrong in Imlay City, Michigan, he later went by Brandon Foster after relocating to Florida in 2014. He worked various jobs in New York and Miami, often performing as a go-go dancer and party promoter at LGBTQ+ venues, including clothing-optional pool parties. Social media posts from 2014 featured Armstrong hinting at cam shows and monetized performances.

In 2016, Armstrong moved to New York City, where he adopted a new identity and continued working in fitness and nightlife. Former friends described him as attractive, ambitious, and constantly seeking new opportunities. Despite being known to date women in the past, those close to him said they were unsurprised by his marriage to Geffen, given his adventurous personality and openness to change.

Armstrong’s early life was marked by hardship. Raised in a family of 13 children in a small Michigan town, he was described as “super secretive” and “always searching for something.” Friends say he rarely discussed his past and carried a sense of rebellion from his youth that may have influenced his life decisions.
Geffen, who made headlines in the past for his business empire and philanthropy, had been seen wearing a gold wedding band in public during their marriage. The divorce marks the end of a whirlwind relationship that began with rapid romance and ends in quiet separation.
