First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has commented on the sexual harassment allegations raised by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, emphasizing the importance of maintaining honor and decorum within the legislative chamber.

The controversy began following a dispute on February 20 between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan over seating arrangements in the Senate. Subsequently, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that her challenges in the chamber stemmed from her refusal of unwanted advances from Akpabio. She later submitted a formal petition on sexual harassment, but the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges declined to consider it, citing procedural and legal constraints.

Speaking ahead of International Women’s Day, Mrs. Tinubu stated that the Senate was taking appropriate steps to address the situation. She stressed that the legislative chamber should be a place of dignity and not controversy.

Addressing women in leadership, she encouraged them to assert themselves and avoid marginalization. Drawing from her experience as a senator for 12 years, she advised women to maintain self-respect and shut down any form of disrespect before it escalates.

“I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may ask why I have not taken a position. I believe the Senate is handling the matter as required,” she said. “We shouldn’t be hearing things like this. It’s a mature chamber and should be treated with respect. It is an honor to serve in such a place.”

Mrs. Tinubu also highlighted the progress women have made over the years, citing figures such as Zuriel Oduwole, who has played a role in advocacy and peace efforts. She commended Nigerian youth for their potential and urged women to continue striving for excellence in their respective fields.
