Authorities in Switzerland have confirmed the discovery of five deceased skiers in the mountains near the upscale resort town of Zermatt. The tragic incident unfolded near the summit of Rimpfischhorn, a 4,199-meter (13,776-foot) peak situated east of Zermatt, close to the Italian border.

The alarm was raised on Saturday when climbers in the area noticed a set of abandoned skis and alerted authorities. In response, a rescue helicopter was dispatched to survey the region surrounding the Rimpfischhorn.

Swiss police announced that rescue crews quickly located the bodies of all five missing individuals. Efforts are now underway to formally identify the victims. An official investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths has been launched.

Rimpfischhorn is a well-known destination for experienced backcountry and alpine skiers due to its challenging terrain and remote location. Though the cause of the tragedy has not yet been confirmed, the area is known for rapidly changing weather and avalanche risk, which often pose dangers to winter sports enthusiasts.
