A domestic argument turned violent Wednesday afternoon in Homestead, Florida, when a 57-year-old woman allegedly attempted to murder her daughter-in-law during a heated altercation witnessed by a young grandchild, authorities said.
At approximately 3:40 p.m., officers from the Homestead Police Department responded to a reported stabbing at a residence in the 700 block of Southwest Fourth Avenue. Upon arrival, police were met at the door by Celestine Ward. Behind her, officers immediately spotted a woman lying in a pool of blood on the living room floor, propped against a cot bed. The victim was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center in critical condition.
Detectives interviewed a child who was present during the incident. The child recounted that her parents had initially been arguing, and after her father left the home, her mother and grandmother, Ward, began fighting. The child stated, “Grandma started to kill Mami with the knife. The knife is in the room under the bed.”

Investigators were later able to speak with the injured woman at the hospital. She stated that she and Ward had been drinking earlier in the day at a local Chili’s restaurant. While she couldn’t recall the reason for their dispute, she remembered Ward charging at her twice—once unarmed and the second time with a knife, stabbing her multiple times.
Ward, who was arrested at the scene, claimed she acted in self-defense and alleged her daughter had punched her repeatedly in the face. However, responding officers noted there were no visible injuries on Ward to corroborate her claim.
She has been charged with attempted felony murder and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where she remained in custody as of Thursday evening.
