Florida State freshman linebacker Ethan Pritchard is in critical condition after being shot on Sunday night while visiting family in Havana, Florida, just northeast of Tallahassee.
The shooting came only hours after the Seminoles’ stunning 31-17 upset victory over Alabama in their 2025 season opener. Pritchard, who joined FSU in December 2024 but did not play in Saturday’s game, was driving a family member home when his car came under gunfire. Authorities believe the incident may have been a case of mistaken identity.
According to the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred around 10 p.m. Deputies found Pritchard wounded inside the vehicle, and emergency crews transported him to a local hospital. He underwent surgery late Sunday and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.

Florida State released a statement Monday morning confirming his condition: “Ethan Pritchard is in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at a local hospital after suffering a gunshot wound last night while visiting family in Havana, Florida. The Pritchard family is thankful for the support from so many people, as well as the care from first responders and medical professionals, and asks that their privacy be respected at this time.”
Captain Anglie Holmes of the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Department said officers quickly removed Pritchard from the car after arriving at the scene before paramedics rushed him to the hospital. The full extent of his injuries has not yet been made public.

On Monday, Florida State football director of recruiting Devin Rispress asked supporters on social media to keep Pritchard in their prayers.
