The Anambra State Government has taken a firm stance against noise pollution caused by roadside preachers using loudspeakers in public spaces, particularly in markets. Governor Chukwuma Soludo has warned that individuals caught violating the directive will face a fine of ₦500,000.
The enforcement of this regulation follows concerns about the disruption caused by unauthorized religious activities in commercial areas. The governor recently addressed the issue directly while visiting a market, cautioning a roadside preacher against disturbing traders and customers with amplified sermons. He advised that religious messages should be delivered in designated places such as churches or rented open spaces, where those interested can choose to participate.
Speaking to traders, Soludo emphasized that marketplaces are for business, not religious gatherings. He reiterated that people should not be forced to listen to religious messages while conducting their daily activities.
The governor further warned that any attempt to turn public spaces into worship centers would attract penalties. He stressed the importance of maintaining order and reducing noise pollution, which he said negatively impacts public health and business operations. Additionally, he announced stricter measures against individuals engaging in unregulated religious activities, vowing to address issues related to misleading preachers and unauthorized public sermons.
The state government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a conducive environment for business and daily life, emphasizing that regulations on noise control will be strictly enforced.
