Panic gripped the Iboko community in the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on Tuesday as gunmen carried out attacks, resulting in the deaths of at least two security guards and two fuel attendants.

According to an anonymous eyewitness, the gunmen, disguised as locals, made stops at various points in the community to purchase food items before launching their assault.

Reportedly, more than 500 individuals, including women, traders, and students, fled for safety, abandoning their goods during the chaos.

One individual, who requested anonymity, narrowly escaped being attacked by the assailants, describing the incident as highly unsettling.

Describing the sequence of events, the source stated, "The gunmen initially visited a popular filling station in Iboko, refueling their vehicles before fatally shooting two individuals. Subsequently, they targeted the Ebubeagu operatives (now known as Neighbourhood Vigilante members), resulting in the death of Frederick Idike and another individual."

The source further disclosed, "Two vigilante members were also brutally attacked with an axe, and their bodies have been transferred to the mortuary. Yesterday's incident occurred at Iboko Market, prompting traders to flee for safety, leaving the market deserted."

Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Ukandu Joshua, acknowledged the loss of two lives and stated that investigations are ongoing.
