Kevin Hunter, ex-husband of former talk show host Wendy Williams, has filed a $250 million lawsuit claiming that Williams’ years-long guardianship has resulted in abuse, exploitation, and violation of her constitutional rights. The suit, filed on June 17, lists 48 defendants, including legal guardian Sabrina Morrissey, New York Judge Lisa Sokoloff, Wells Fargo, Williams’ assisted living facility, and several attorneys.
Hunter, who identifies himself as a co-plaintiff and seeks to be recognized legally as Williams' “next friend,” alleges that his former wife is being held in “fraudulent bondage” under a corrupt system. The complaint accuses the guardianship structure of serving as “a weapon, not a shield,” asserting that Williams has been subjected to “unrestrained abuse, maltreatment, and fiscal malfeasance” since the guardianship was imposed in 2022.

The lawsuit does not aim to terminate the guardianship but demands significant changes, including the appointment of a new impartial guardian, unsealing of case files, a forensic audit of her finances, and her release from what is described as “involuntary confinement.” The complaint seeks $250 million in damages for alleged financial loss, emotional distress, reputational harm, and deprivation of liberty.
Hunter contends that Williams was placed under guardianship in a “secret proceeding” without being granted adequate legal representation or an independent medical evaluation. The case initially cited her dementia diagnosis, though Williams has publicly denied cognitive impairment. The lawsuit also claims that Williams has been overmedicated and isolated from her family and legal counsel.
One of the most disturbing allegations involves a care specialist who reportedly photographed Williams in a state of undress without consent and attempted to sell the images to media outlets. Hunter also accuses Judge Sokoloff of barring Williams' legal representatives from participating in proceedings and accessing case files.
Citing examples of alleged financial mismanagement, the suit references a 2024 tax lien, the forced sale of Williams’ New York penthouse, and the liquidation of personal items. Hunter estimates she has lost $20 million annually due to her inability to work. He also claims her son was denied access to his college fund.

Hunter alleges that a $60,000 payment was made from Williams’ Wells Fargo account to Dr. Rami Kaminski, the physician who authored the letter declaring her unfit in January 2022. The complaint further suggests a conflict of interest, alleging that Wells Fargo and court-appointed attorney Linda Redlisky contributed financially to Judge Sokoloff’s re-election campaign.
According to Hunter, a coordinated campaign began in February 2022 to isolate Williams through judicial and extrajudicial actions, stripping her of access to legal counsel, communication tools, family contact, and control over her own public narrative.
While attorney LaShawn Thomas, who filed the complaint, admitted that Williams is “not legally aware” of all the claims in the lawsuit, he emphasized his intent to provide sufficient evidence to prove that she is being unjustly held under guardianship.
