Tyquane Jemmott, 33, has been indicted on charges of second-degree murder for the brutal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend, Shirley Rodriguez, 29, outside her Manhattan apartment building. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office announced the indictment on Wednesday.
Jemmott is accused of waiting outside Rodriguez's Washington Heights building for approximately three hours on the morning of May 20. When Rodriguez left for work around 5:30 a.m., Jemmott allegedly launched a vicious, minute-long attack, stabbing her at least 10 times in the face, arms, and torso. Rodriguez reportedly cried out, "Ty, why me? Why me?" during the assault.
Despite her severe injuries, Rodriguez managed to stumble into the building's lobby and buzz her apartment to summon her mother and sister. She identified her attacker, saying, "Ty did this to me," before succumbing to her wounds.
Assistant DA Shilpa Kalra described the incident as a "gruesome domestic violence murder" and detailed the premeditated nature of the attack, noting that Jemmott was captured on video hiding behind parked vehicles, waiting for Rodriguez. The attack occurred just a week after Rodriguez had broken up with Jemmott.
Jemmott fled the scene but was apprehended later that day at a relative's apartment in the Bronx.
"Shirley Rodriguez was beloved by her family, including her mother, father, and sister who so tragically had to hear this young woman’s final words as she succumbed to her injuries," said DA Alvin Bragg in a statement. "My thoughts are with them as they continue to grieve her loss."
Jemmott has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on September 18.
