A Missouri woman, Michelle Peters, 47, has been accused of spiking her husband’s Mountain Dew with Roundup weed killer, allegedly due to his lack of enthusiasm over his 50th birthday party.

Peters is facing charges of first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action, according to court records.

Investigators claim Peters added Roundup weed killer and insecticide to her husband's Mountain Dew drinks multiple times in May and June. Her husband began feeling ill and grew suspicious of his drinks.

Prompted by his suspicions, he reviewed surveillance footage from their home, which reportedly showed Peters taking one of his sodas from the refrigerator in their garage and then grabbing a bottle of Roundup before heading outside.

The husband told police he believed his wife tampered with his drinks because he hadn't shown enough excitement for the 50th birthday party she planned. He also suspected she was after his $500,000 life insurance policy.

Questioned by the Laclede County Sheriff's Office on June 24, Peters initially denied tampering with the drinks. When confronted with the video evidence, she claimed she was making a weed-killing agent she saw on Pinterest by combining soda with lawn chemicals.

However, Peters eventually admitted to putting insecticide in her husband's Mountain Dew, saying she was feeling underappreciated and was trying to be “mean.” Court records indicate she felt frustrated and believed she should have just divorced her husband, whom she described as selfish amidst ongoing relationship issues.

Glyphosate, a chemical found in Roundup, can cause burns, mouth and throat pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially death if consumed.

Peters has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bond at the Laclede County Detention Center. Her next court appearance is scheduled for July 2.
