The Oklahoma City Thunder secured their first NBA championship in franchise history on Sunday night, defeating the Indiana Pacers 103â91 in Game 7. The Thunder, who were 6.5-point favorites at home, delivered a dominant fourth-quarter performance to claim the title and complete their historic playoff run.
While fans celebrated on the court and in the stands, one bettor in Ohio had even more reason to cheer. According to sportsbook data, the individual placed a staggering $8 million bet on June 5âthe night of Game 1âbacking the Thunder to win the NBA Finals at -700 odds. The wager returned $1,142,857.15, making it one of the largest single bets in legal U.S. sports betting history.
The high-stakes wager eclipsed other well-known bets, including a $3 million bet placed by Jim âMattress Mackâ McIngvale on the Houston Astros in 2022. Though the payout on the OKC bet was comparatively lower in terms of return-on-investment, the initial stake was significantly higher.
Led by All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City controlled much of Game 7 and pulled away late in the second half to deny the Pacers a comeback. The Thunderâs playoff run has solidified them as serious contenders for years to come.
Following their championship win, Oklahoma City opened as +240 favorites to win the 2025â26 NBA titleâthe shortest preseason odds for any team since the 2018â19 Golden State Warriors. That Warriors team, an odds-on preseason favorite at -168, reached the Finals but lost to the Toronto Raptors after suffering major injuries to key players.
Behind the Thunder in next seasonâs title odds are the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks, both listed at +700 and considered top contenders in the Eastern Conference. The Houston Rockets sit at +800, representing the next-highest odds among Western Conference teams outside of OKC.
The Thunder's youth, depth, and rising stars have turned them into a betting favorite and a long-term powerhouse. With their first championship now in the books, Oklahoma Cityâs futureâon the court and at the sportsbooksâlooks brighter than ever.
