Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly was rushed to a hospital following a suspected overdose on medication while in federal custody at the Federal Correctional Institute in North Carolina, according to new court documents filed by his attorney.

Kelly, 58, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is currently serving a 30-year sentence after being convicted in 2021 of racketeering and sex trafficking in New York. The medical emergency reportedly occurred just days after he was placed in solitary confinement on June 10 and given anxiety medication by prison staff.

According to the filing submitted by his attorney, Beau B. Brindley, Kelly was administered additional medications during his solitary confinement and instructed to take them. On June 13, the singer reported feeling “faint” and “dizzy,” experienced black spots in his vision, and eventually passed out. He was transported by ambulance to Duke University Hospital for emergency treatment.

While en route to the hospital, Kelly allegedly overheard a prison officer say, “This is going to open a whole new can of worms,” suggesting the incident may lead to broader consequences. His legal team now claims the incident was the result of dangerously high doses of medication administered without proper oversight.

The alleged overdose came shortly after Kelly filed an emergency motion seeking immediate release from prison, claiming a murder-for-hire plot had been orchestrated against him. According to the court documents, the singer believes he was placed in solitary confinement as retaliation for filing the motion.

Included in the emergency motion was a sworn statement from a terminally ill inmate, Mikeal Glenn Stine, who reportedly claimed to be the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood. Stine alleged that prison officials approached him with an offer of early release in exchange for assassinating Kelly.

The motion and subsequent medical incident have intensified scrutiny on the conditions of Kelly’s imprisonment and raised serious concerns regarding prisoner safety and institutional conduct at the North Carolina facility.
