A tragic murder-suicide unfolded in Queens on Saturday night, rooted in a love triangle that ended in violence and loss. The shocking incident occurred in Bayside just after 10 p.m., when police responded to a call and discovered 17-year-old Neo Secaira suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Nearby, 28-year-old Frank Liu, a U.S. Marine preparing for redeployment, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Both men were transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

According to law enforcement sources, the violence stemmed from a romantic conflict involving Secaira, Liu, and a 19-year-old woman who had previously been in a relationship with Liu. She was reportedly present at the scene and witnessed the deadly encounter. Liu’s father, Huili Liu, 64, said his son had been struggling with psychological trauma related to his military service, including recent losses among fellow Marines stationed in Jordan. He also expressed concern about the emotional toll of his son’s deteriorating relationship with the woman.

“My son had psychological treatment all the time in the Marine Corps,” said Huili Liu. “Particularly recently, because his colleagues in Jordan, they died. The pressure of being called up and this, together, it was too much.”

Liu had met the young woman while stationed in North Carolina and later brought her to New York, where she lived in the family’s apartment for about six months. Recently, she confessed to Liu that she was also involved with Secaira.

“I say, why? It’s just one girl. There are many girls,” Liu’s father recalled telling his son. “The girl lived in my apartment for half a year. He spent quite a while with her. She decided to study here.”

Details about when Secaira began dating the woman remain unclear. His mother, Yolanda Secaira, 50, learned of her son’s death in an agonizing visit from Liu’s mother early Sunday morning.

“At 7:50 this morning, a woman rings my bell,” she said. “She asked me, ‘Your son has curly hair?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ She said my son killed your son. I said, ‘What? Your son killed my son?’ She said yes. It’s a horrible story, and then she pointed to my husband and she turned and left.”

The young woman allegedly broke off her relationship with Liu and began seeing Secaira, triggering the fatal confrontation. According to Yolanda Secaira, her son’s employer said the woman had called him at work Saturday, asking to be picked up. He left early to meet her and was killed upon arrival.

A building superintendent where Liu lived described him as an Army veteran who had lived with his parents in their fourth-floor apartment for around 10 years. The superintendent recalled a troubling incident about seven months earlier involving Liu and the young woman.

“She locked herself out and I tried to help her. She called him, and he called me and started yelling, asking, ‘Why aren’t you trying to help her?’ Then he called again, screaming and cursing and angry and crazy,” the superintendent said. “Some hours later, it turned out she was in the wrong building. It’s always stuff like this with him — all this crazy kid stuff. He was a stupid kid.”

Residents in the neighborhood were shaken by the gunfire. One neighbor, Jennie Kim, 43, described the terrifying moments following the shooting.

“I heard the gunshots and then I heard a woman screaming, ‘Help, help,’” she said. “My daughter was calling me and she was afraid. I went in and we looked and we saw a young woman, high school maybe college age. Teens, maybe 20. Asian lady, long hair. And we heard the shots.”

“There are three in a row and then a pause, maybe 30 seconds, maybe a minute,” she said. “And then at least one more gunshot.”

The NYPD has not officially released the names of the victims. The investigation into the deadly shooting remains ongoing.
