Texas Woman, 20, Dies After Falling Off Jet Ski in Lake Houston; Investigation Ongoing (video)

A 20-year-old woman from Texas has died after falling from a jet ski in Lake Houston, just hours after sending a cheerful video to her boyfriend from the water. The Houston Police Department confirmed the body of Ashley Gil was recovered on Thursday, June 19, two days after she went missing near Deussen Park.
Ashley disappeared on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 17, after falling off a jet ski that was reportedly carrying multiple passengers. Authorities said she was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, though video shared by her boyfriend earlier in the day showed her wearing one.
Jason Rodriguez, Ashley’s boyfriend, was out of town for work when he received a lighthearted video from her around noon on the day of the accident. He told investigators and media outlets that questions remain about what exactly happened in the hours that followed.
Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Ashley’s death. An autopsy has been ordered to confirm the cause of death as police continue gathering evidence.
Deussen Park was immediately closed on June 17 to allow search and rescue teams to conduct operations in coordination with Houston Police. The park remained closed on Wednesday, June 18, as the search continued. Ashley’s body was located the following day.
Rodney Ellis, Harris County Commissioner, issued a statement on June 19 expressing condolences to Ashley’s family: “My heart goes out to her family, her loved ones and everyone affected by this tragic loss.”
Ashley’s sister, Kathy Gil, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and other unexpected costs related to the tragedy. The fundraiser describes Ashley as “a bright light in the lives of so many, full of love, laughter and kindness,” and notes that her absence has left a “deep void” in the hearts of family and friends.
Ashley Gil was remembered as a young woman with an uplifting spirit who brought joy to those around her. Loved ones now await further information from authorities to gain clarity on the incident that claimed her life.
